What is this course about? This strongly vocational course provides you with all the skills necessary to succeed in this competitive industry. It is specifically tailored to commercial advertising and editorial work, primarily using digital capture, image processing and workflow methods, but also covers many of the essential photographic and transferable skills required in a broader range of photographic areas. The course is in partnership with London Metropolitan University.

Who is this course for? This course is aimed at those who already have some previous knowledge and experience of photography and want to enter the industry. The course is demanding and has earned a reputation for preparing its students thoroughly for work in professional photography. A key feature is the involvement of industry in the design and delivery of the course, plus the benefit of the Work Based Learning module, in which students undertake a significant period of industrial experience, e.g. working in a studio, with a location photographer, in a laboratory, retouching house, picture desk or image library.

What do I need to get on the course? You need to have at least one of the following:

· BTEC National Certificate or National Diploma in Photography

· GNVQ Advanced in Art and Design

· Foundation Award in Art and Design

· Photography A-level plus one other at grade A-C and relevant GCSE passes at grades A-C

· Access Certificate to Higher Education
Applications are welcome from mature students who may not have the minimum entry requirements, but have appropriate skills and knowledge, and some work experience. You should have English and maths skills equivalent to GCSE level.
Applicants with other equivalent qualifications are encouraged to apply as are applicants with experience of working in the industry.
International applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis with equivalent qualifications being accepted.

What will I study? The course is taught to small groups by a team of highly experienced lecturers with a diverse range of commercial experience, most of whom are still practicing freelance photographers. The core teaching is richly supplemented by a diverse range of specialist Visiting Tutors who are all practicing photographers. Core modules include photographic techniques, computers in photography, visual language, studio photography, supplemented by a range of additional modules including press photography and photo journalism, advertising photography, creating digital images, multi media and exhibition, contemporary conceptual and commercial practice, fashion, editorial and PR photography and specialist photographic practice.

What qualification will I get? On successful completion you will gain a Foundation Degree in Photography, awarded by London Metropolitan University.

What can I do after the course? You can go on to work as a photographer in photographic, design or production studios or in other areas of the media industry, such as laboratories, retouching houses, press, social/high street, film/video, galleries, magazine picture desks or image libraries. You can also progress to the second or third year of a degree course, depending on your grades and modules selected.
