Course programme



This course is intended for students who have a strong interest in photography and are intending to pursue a career in the photographic industry.


During the Photography UAL Diploma course you will take a broad approach to photography and carry out projects which will allow you to experiment with different techniques. You will undertake projects covering camera techniques, studio photography, working with moving image, location photography, experimental photography and darkroom techniques.


As well as contemporary practice, you will learn the historical and vocational skill sets to ensure a broad based knowledge of the subject area and the wider Creative Arts. The course will cover both theoretical and practical assignments which will be developed through classroom and workshop activity, demonstrations, group and individual tutorials, and independent learning.


The course will enable you to make informed choices with regard to a career in the Creative Arts sector. As part of the course you will study English and maths Functional Skills or GCSE to enhance your progression to the next level of education or to employment.

Course Content
Photography UAL Diploma Level 2 units may include:

  • Introduction to Materials, Processes and Technical Skills

  • Introduction to Contextual Research

  • Introduction to Drawing Skills

  • Introduction to Communication Skills

  • Solving 2D Creative Problems

  • Solving Time-Based Creative Problems

  • Developing and Producing a Personal Project





Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs (grades A*-E), including English and maths, or satisfactory results in a relevant Level 1 qualification, and an interview with a portfolio of artwork.

Course Progression

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be eligible to progress on to courses such as; Art and Design UAL Diploma Level 3, Graphic Communication UAL Extended Diploma Level 3, UAL Extended Diploma in Photography Level 3, Interactive Media and Games Level 3, or the UAL Extended Diploma in Fashion and Textiles Level 3.
