PHYSICS

Why should I come to Pendleton College?
Physics is part of a Grade 1 Science Department which was rated outstanding by the recent Ofsted inspection. Consistently outstanding success is evidence of the levels of interest and commitment shown by our students. The tutors are dedicated, enthusiastic, and highly-qualified with links to the best universities in England and the USA. The physics labs are modern and well equipped. The department offers students a rich programme of extra curricular activity with go-kart racing, flying lessons, trips to the top research centres in the world as well as links for placements with industry. The department has gained a reputation as the most exciting place to study physics in the region.

What will I study?
The world you live in, from the sigh you make to the roar of an ocean wave, from the beauty of a rainbow to the devastation of a tsunami, from the dance of a butterfly to the phases of the moon, all the Universe that surrounds you, is physics. From the mobile phone to your video game, from your fridge to your oven, all the technology that affects, eases and enriches your live is physics. The course will introduce you to the basic ideas of physics and will give you the tools to start the most amazing journey of discovery. Year 1 (AS):
  • Particles, Quantum Phenomena and Electricity
  • Mechanics, Materials and Waves
  • Investigative and Practical Skills
Year 2 (A2):
  • Fields and Further Mechanics
  • Nuclear Physics, Thermal Physics and Optional Topic
  • Investigative and Practical Skills

What will I achieve?
It is no accident that the highest paid jobs are occupied by physicists. The skills that you gain (logical thinking, self confidence, the ability to analyse complex problems) do not limit you to a job in research. As a matter of fact the most sought after employees are physicists. Some of the career choices are: medicine, computing, engineering, RAF, telecommunications, teaching, architecture, astrophysics, forensic science, environmental science, veterinary science and management consultancy just to name a few.

How is the course assessed?

What else will I do?
Students also get to go on different trips that in the past have included Greece, France, CERN in Geneva, rock-climbing, skiing, paintballing, flying lessons and go-karting. Visiting speakers have included Prof. Peacock from MIT Boston and Prof. Fred Loebinger from Manchester University.
