This apprenticeship could see you working for a large public sector company helping with maintenance, a construction company working on new builds or for a small business as an assistant plumber. So if you are friendly and reliable with good communication skills and enjoy solving problems this could be the apprenticeship for you. Apprentices will learn how to install hot and cold water systems, including bathrooms, above ground drainage, central heating and rainwater harvesting. This course will also teach you about new green technologies which are highly sought after in the industry as a way of reducing both personal and business costs and helping the environment.

What I would highlight: I liked the fact that there was plenty of practical, also there were lessons on lead work and gas which was great.
What could be improved: Some of the materials and apparatus were too old and broken to really benefit from. More investment needed.

Entry Requirements

Entry criteria varies depending on the framework that you are studying and the needs of the employer, however a good level of secondary education is expected and many employers expect you to have maths and English GCSE at a C grade or above. Employers also look for skills like motivation, good interpersonal skills, good communication skills and a willingness to learn and will set their own specifications depending on the role.

Delivery and Assessment

The duration of an apprenticeship will vary depending on the needs of the employer but you will be required to complete qualifications during the period usually with set study days. As part of the apprenticeship, there will be a number of specific skills that your employer or college tutor will monitor and observe to prove that you reached a certain level of understanding.

Progression

On completion of this programme, you may want to progress onto an advanced level apprenticeship. Alternatively you could secure work as a Craft Plumber, Trainee Central Heating Installer, Trainee Central Heating Maintenance Engineer.
