What is PMP?

PMP (Project Management Professional) a globally recognised project management credential. PMP demonstrates that project managers have the experience and competency to lead projects efficiently and effectively.

PMP is provided by the PMI (Project Management Institute), a global not-for-profit project management association for project, program and portfolio management professionals.

Case Study

Hong Kong and China used the methodologies a PMP would use from the PMBOK® Guide to manage the construction of a pipeline to transport natural gas from China to Hong Kong.

In the late 2000s, Hong Kong’s existing source for natural gas, the Yacheng 13-1 gas field in Hainan, China, was becoming depleted. The answer was for CLP/CAPCO (a joint venture between ExxonMobil Energy and CLP Power Hong Kong) to construct a new pipeline connecting Hong Kong to the longest natural gas pipeline in the world, the Second West-East Gas Pipeline (WEPII).

With a target of bringing WEPII’s gas to Hong Kong by the end of 2012, the project had to be managed efficiently and effectively.

By using best practices from the PMBOK® Guide, the Hong Kong line was finished on time and within budget. Before the project’s initiation, the team thoroughly planned and scheduled every part to ensure the pipeline would properly and was safe. In order to meet the tight deadlines required, the project was developed using the waterfall methodology, where each stage was completed before the next one was started. In addition to this, the scope was tightly controlled, with any changes going through a thorough management process.
