This course enables rigorous academic investigation into education, with the objective of supporting your professional development in the field. At its heart is how, as an educational professional, you put advanced theories into practice. You will learn how to explore educational research and make informed comment on the applicability, relevance and usefulness of theories, concepts, models, methodologies and techniques applied to practice.
The course explores theoretical perspectives relating to adult literacy/ESOL and/or Numeracy/Mathematics teaching and learning and their implications for practice. It provides an opportunity to explore and critically compare a wide variety of models of language and mathematics learning, including socio-cultural, constructivist and psychological theories, and also the potential barriers to learning faced by adult learners.
What you will studyA total of 180 credits must be studied to be awarded the MA in Policy and Practice in Basic Skills in Education. You will need to study 3 core modules and a dissertation project plus 3 optional modules from the list below.
