The AS year will prepare students for two exams; one on People and Politics; the other is on Governing the UK. In essence, we will examine the structures of authority and power in the UK - legislature, executive and judiciary and how these differ from those of other political systems. Students will develop a critical awareness of the nature of Politics and the relationship between the people and the different political systems. Students will also gain an understanding of parties, party systems and pressure groups in the UK as well as an understanding of electoral systems, parliamentary elections, voting behaviour and party ideology. In addition, students will explore the rights of the individual and the effect which the EU is having on all of our lives.
In the second year, students will develop the skills which they learnt at AS-Level. One paper will be concentrated on the examination of structures of global politics; the other will focus specifically on problems and issues in global governance today. Students will explore and compare a range of political ideas, democratic theories and systems. They will examine the role of the modern state in the 21st century, engage with issues which may involve conflict, war and terrorism, examine the impact of globalisation, the rise of the environmentalist agenda and the possibilities of global governance, amongst other things. Students will be able to refer to a range of political thinkers and consider a number of different theories which attempt to explain world politics in the contemporary world. Throughout the course, students will be expected to pay close attention to world political events via the relevant media.
