Course Overview
This is a general preparatory course intended as an introduction to Popular Music or Music Technology in both a practical and theoretical context. It is particularly relevant to students who wish to proceed to the National Diplomain Popular Music or a National Diploma in Music Technology. It is also relevant to those who wish to work as performing musicians or sound engineers/producers.

Course Structure
The course includes Edexcel Units in Exploring the Music Profession and Creating a Musical Product. A broad introduction to performance and recording skills is given, with particular relevance to practical assignments.

The course covers:
  • Planning and Creating a Musical Product
  • Exploring the Music Profession
  • Working as a Musical Ensemble
  • Producing a Musical recording
  • Exploring Computer Systems used by Musicians
  • Exploring Musical Composition
  • Developing as a musical performer
  • Introducing DJ Technology

The main examination is a musical product, and the process of creating this productis also assessed. Students can be accepted on this course as either a music performer e.g. Guitarist, Singer, DJ or as a technician e.g. Sound Engineer, Producer.

BTEC First Diploma in Performing Arts (Music)

Assessments/Examinations
Students are assessed by a variety of methods including assignments, projects, case studies, workshops, performances and evaluations. Practical work representing actual or simulated music industry scenarios, often in groups, form the main part of their assessments. Students are encouraged to perform in a range of productions in the College and at public venues in the East Kent area. Success at this course provides a basic standard qualification adequate for progression to the National Diploma.

Cost / Equipment
Students over 19 may be required to pay tuition fees. Registration fees for students who are aged 19 or over at the start of the course and will be approx£78.

The College supplies most materials and equipment, but students may have to pay for College trips, which should not exceed£40 in total.

Performance based students must provide their own instrument. A guitar or keyboard can be purchased for approx.£130.

Help with essential equipment costs may be available to students who experience financial difficulties.
