Testing and Inspection work covers a wide range of jobs at different levels in all industries, either working as part of a team or individually. Many types of equipment within these industries
require PAT or Portable Appliance Testing. A PAT or Portable
Appliance Test is a process by which electrical appliances are
routinely checked to see whether they are safe. When people work with electrical appliances, health and safety regulations say that appliances must be safe. The following are examples of some the duties that may be included when conducting Portable Appliance Testing:
- Having an awareness of electrical health and safety
issues - Inspection of electrical and electronic equipment
- Inspection of wiring
- Checking fuses and ratings
- Maintaining an accurate database of records of
inspections - Planning and scheduling inspections in line with
customer requirements

In general the training involves:
The PAT training programme is a City and Guilds Level 3 qualification, guiding learners in both the legal implications and technical requirements associated with Portable Appliance Testing. Exercises include theory and practical hands on learning, which provide a broad and flexible grounding. This helps you
achieve the ability and the confidence to start testing.
Flexible training:
Training is based on IEE’s Code of Practice, including Basic Electrical Theory, Equipment Construction, Use of Measuring
Equipment, Formal Inspection and Combined Testing of Electrical Equipment and Testing using Robin/Seward Portable Appliance Testers. The length of training depends on the individual trainee’s needs, circumstances and job goals. These will be discussed and agreed with the Case Manager at assessment stage.
Level of training and qualifications offered:
- St Loye’s Certificate of Competence – In-house Certificate
- 2377-12 - Level 3 Certificate for In Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment (Examining Body for this is City and Guilds)
Further training programmes include:
- Customer Relation – In-house Certificate
Our Person Centred approach:
Once funding has been agreed, you will be invited in for an assessment with a dedicated Case Manager who will discuss with you your skills, aspirations and abilities and from this confirm whether you are ready to start training for work with St Loye's. The Case Manager will then build an Individual Employment
Plan (IEP) in agreement with you. This will include personally tailored skills training, development, support and employment programmes.
