Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) City & Guilds 2377

All 'portable appliances' used in the workplace must be adequately maintained and used in a safe manner in accordance with legal requirements. In order to meet this requirement, appliances should be regularly tested based on a risk assessment for each appliance. This course provides participants with the knowledge of the legal requirements and the expertise to carry out such testing competently


Course Presentation
Delivery is a combination of presentations, interactive sessions and 'hands-on' activity with ample opportunity for participants to use a leading Portable Appliance Tester. Course documentation is provided along with the loan of the IEE Guide to Portable Appliance Testing for the duration of the course.

Course Objectives
On completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • understand the dangers associated with portable appliance testing and the precautions necessary both for safety and for the protection of equipment;
  • determine the legal requirement for testing portable appliances;
  • assess the required frequency of testing;
  • understand the legal requirements for specific identification of equipment;
  • implement an audit of portable appliances within a company;
  • recognise the testing requirements for different classes of equipment;
  • carry out visual inspection of appliances and equipment;
  • carry out the following tests using a wide range of proprietary portable appliance testers
    • earth continuity (low and high current)
    • insulation resistance
    • load test
    • earth leakage;
  • correctly interpret test results and determine appropriate pass levels;
  • maintain a system of record keeping which complies with the statutory requirements.

Certification
Successful completion of the practical exercises and the on-line examination leads to the award of City & Guilds of London Certificate 2377.
