About this course

Practical observation and written assignments. You will be asked to write a weekly journal recording your personal development and to submit a 500 word summary of this at the end of each term. In addition to this journal you will write four assignments and produce a portfolio of evidence of learning covering: Counselling theory. Ethical use of counselling skills. Evaluating your counselling skills. Personal development.

Progression from ABC Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills to ABC Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling is not automatic.


Understand the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy and use it to solve dilemmas whether or not they are counselling related.
Respect other people’s views, attitudes, belief structures and cultures, especially those who are disadvantaged in society by reason of class, race, religion, disability, age, gender, or sexual orientation.
Show a commitment to anti-oppressive practices and non discriminatory use of counselling skills.
Show a working understanding of the Person-Centred Approach and a clear knowledge of CBT and psychodynamic ways of working and of the need to avoid the danger of using techniques based on a limited understanding.
Use competently and effectively a range of counselling skills including:
attentiveness, rapport building, active listening, minimal encouragers, managing silence, empathic listening, reflecting back, effective questioning, paraphrasing, summarising, focusing and challenging.
