About this course

Candidates for all of our M.Th. degrees normally need an upper-second Honours degree in Divinity, Religious Studies or the equivalent. Students whose mother tongue is not English also require IELTS 6.5 including writing score 6.0; or TOEFL score of 580 (computer-based TOEFL 237) with TWE 4.5, or equivalent as a condition of entry. Applicants must furnish the University with transcripts of their previous academic study and also with the names of two academic referees; applicants may also send the reference letters, in signed sealed envelopes, with the application.

The MTh in Practical Theology and Christian Ethics is a unique and innovative multidisciplinary degree course which combines an intellectually challenging introduction to the nature of Practical Theology and Christian Ethics with a focus on the complexities of ministry and Christian practices within a cultural context which is changing and challenging for the Church.

It offers a rigorous academic programme in practical theology and Christian Ethics designed to equip students with the competencies and insights required for doctoral level research in these disciplines.

It provides students with a stimulating and challenging multidisciplinary context wherein the complex interfaces between the theological disciplines and the practices of church and world can be explored rigorously and creatively.

It is open to individuals whose prior knowledge and experience is in other disciplines, but who have interests in Practical Theology and Christian Ethics and are looking for a crash course to introduce them to their concerns and methodologies and equip them for effective ministry in different contexts.

Course Content

The degree of MTh in Practical Theology and Christian Ethics consists of the following components:

  • Two research training courses:
    • A course on method in Christian Theology, which introduces the latest thinking in a variety of theological disciplines.
    • A dissertation colloquium, which is skills-based workshop leading to the writing of a dissertation.
  • Four further course units must be taken. These must include:
    • Pastoral Care and Counselling.
    • Christian Ethics.
    • Bible in Ministry.
    • One course from any of the other courses offered at Masters level in the College of Arts and Social Sciences.
  • A dissertation of 20,000 words on a topic of the student's choice, related to Practical Theology and Christian Ethics.

Assessment

Courses are assessed through a variety of continuing assessment approaches and examinations.

Duration

12 months, full-time.
