PRACTICAL WAYS TO MANAGE ATTACHMENT PROBLEMS (1 DAY COURSE)

ABOUT THE COURSE

Many children in foster care and even some children who are not accommodated do not have normal healthy attachments with their carers or parents. These children's attachment problems frequently originate in their birth families. However, frequent moves and instability in foster/adoptive home, gives children further problems of developing trust and a sense of age appropriate autonomy. These things massively affect the way they behave and can lead to very distorted, unhappy relationships that ultimately disrupt family life. Normal ways of responding to the behaviour of these children often do not work.

It is vital therefore if children and carers are to achieve stability and permanency, that they deal effectively and practically with these issues, and thus enable a child to build a healthy attachment.

A child who has experienced one healthy attachment will find it easier to transfer this attachment to someone else.

This one day course raises the awareness and understanding of these problems - their origin, development and effects. It also offers practical ways of dealing with the presenting behaviour thus enabling appropriate attachments to develop.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES

This course aims to:

  • Provide practical and effective advice to carers and professionals about how they can best deal with the behaviour presented by children who have attachment problems.
  • Raise understanding around attachment issues, how they develop, how they present and how they need a different approach.
  • Raise awareness and build confidence in this area of work to enable carers and workers to deal effectively with the issues and in doing so improve family life for everyone and especially the child.
  • Create a safe learning environment through humour, humanity and warmth which will enable change.

On completion of the course delegates are provided with course materials and are awarded a certificate. The training will commence at 9:30am and finish at 3:30pm. This course runs with a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 25 delegates.
