Preparation for Employment with Construction (PSY0010)
What are the Course Details?
The Preparation for Employment with Construction programme offers an opportunity to develop the skills required by employers. It is for learners aged 16-18 who have had some difficulties at school and left without any or few qualifications or who did not meet the grades that are required for an NVQ 1 or Foundation Level course.
Is the Course for Me?
The course allows learners to gain practical workshop experience in either wood, painting and decorating or brickwork whilst gaining other skills that will be useful when seeking Further Education courses or employment.
What are the Entry Requirements?
There are no formal entry requirements, though you will need to complete an entry interview and initial assessment.
Learners will need to demonstrate a keen interest in construction to be accepted onto the course.
What will I Learn?
Units of study on this course include:
- Contributing to the Health and Safety of the Workplace
- Handling and Storing Materials/Components
- Personal Work Skills
- Carrying out Operations
Learners will also study ICT as well as City and Guilds Numeracy and Literacy qualifications.
How will I Learn?
As part of this course, you will have a mix of classroom activities and practical sessions based in the College's extensive construction workshops.
Learners will benefit from a programme of learning based on their identified individual needs.
How will I be Assessed?
Having been assessed at the beginning of the course you will be placed at a suitable level. During the course you will be required to put together a file of work and carry out practical tasks.
You will be assessed throughout the course, as and when you are ready.
What Enrichments are Available?
Learners will have access to a wide range of enrichment activities within the College to develop and broaden their experience of College life. Enrichment activities include joining sports teams, playing golf and taking part in organised trips such as paintballing or to Meadowhall.
Are there any Trips or Visits?
Trips and visits may be arranged throughout the course as part of the Enrichment Programme.
Is there any Work Experience?
Work experience does not form a part of this course although learners will spend time in the workshops acquiring the skills required for employment within the construction industry.
What can I Progress to?
At the end of the course you will have the opportunity to progress on to Further Education courses and/or employment.
Other Learner Experiences
Learners on this course gain increased confidence and, with the support given throughout the course, acquire the skills they need to progress onto higher level construction courses or to progress into employment.

Acceptance onto courses may be subject to a satisfactory interview and references. For some courses learners may also be required to pay for a CRB disclosure.
