Product Design is an academic course leadin to technical employment or higher education. It is a natural progression from Design and Technology - Graphics/Resistant Materials GCSE. The Product Design course will enable you to develop the skills and knowledge that are commonly used within field. Examples of Product Design items range from packaging to automotive design.

About this course

Ideally you should have four GCSEs at grade C or above including Design and Technology, English and Maths. Students with other qualifications will be considered on an individual basis. There will be initial charges for you to obtain you own materials, including the use of specialist equipment.

About the Course
You will study all aspects of the design process including: analysing the design problem; researching; idea generation; development through modelling, including three-dimensional modelling and computer-aided design; presenting formal engineering drawings; manufacturing artefacts; and evaluation of the final artefact. In addition you will study material and industrial manufacturing techniques, presenting work both within design folders and
within a formal written study.
AS Product Design students are advised to take ABC CAD (if not taking AS CAD) as an enhancement.

How is the course assessed?
During the AS year assessment will be: Product study design folder - 40% Illustrated written case study - 30%
One-and-a-half hour written exam - 30%
During the A2 year assessment will be:
A large Design and Make project - 60%
A two-hour written exam - 40%
Fees
No Course Fees for Under 19's. Over 19's must pay, or claim Level 2 or Level 3 Entitlement for FREE courses .
Are there opportunities for trips or visits?
Product Design students attend Southampton Solent University†s Faculty of Technology and learn about aspects of the design industry.
