What you need to know
How will I study?

Term 1 modules covered include: introduction to art direction and production design; core skills and techniques. Professional practice through work based experience. References and research methods; script breakdown, action props and graphics for film and TV. Drawing techniques and processes. Term 2 modules covered include: personal based studio project; building on specialised art direction and design skills. Ideas development from script, through research, to drafting and scale model. Contextual studies. Term 3 modules covered include: professional practice, studio and/or location design live project, implementing skills in art direction and production design. Drawing techniques continue. Completed portfolio, sketchbook work and design presentation. The second year (HND) provides opportunities to improve design methodology, idea generation and specialist skills. You will work on studio and/or location projects to develop your professional portfolio.
How will I be taught?

The HND course is both a practical and theory based course that delivers access to industry professionals who impart their knowledge across the film industry in workshops, one to one tutorials and class-based research and delivery. There are weekly classes in art department requirements, script analysis and breakdown, research methods, surveying, technical drawing, model making, idea development, action props and graphics, standby art direction and working on camera.
How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through several practical projects throughout the year which incorporate the more theoretical and research based units of the qualification.
