A Masters in Architecture taught at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT), the pioneer of sustainability practice. It replaces the ARB Part II validated course, the Professional Diploma in Architecture: Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies, which has been running successfully since 2008.
This course is delivered at CAT’s Graduate School of the Environment based in the award-winning Wales Institute for Sustainable Education (WISE), designed by Pat Borer and David Lea who regularly guest lecture on the Architecture Masters. Surrounded by mountains and woodlands, this location fosters a unique learning experience in a truly sustainable environment.
CAT’s 40 years of experience in sustainability education has led to the development of courses that not only tackle environmental issues, but focus on sustainability at the core of every aspect of learning.
The Masters of Sustainable Architecture Part 2 course is taught in the Welsh Institute of Sustainable Education (WISE building). This iconic building was named building of the year by the Telegraph in 2010, it also won a internationally recognised RIBA award in 2011.
Designed by CAT architects Pat Borer and David Lea, it includes:
• a 200-seat circular lecture theatre made from rammed earth
• Three large classrooms/workspaces/labs and two further smaller seminar rooms
• A computer suite
• Foyer with games, books and a bar
• 24 en-suite twin bedrooms, overlooking a large open roof garden and decking

About this course
The MArch: Sustainable Architecture is aimed at the architecture student who understands that the world is in a time of transition and that building design plays an important role in environmental impact. Therefore there is great potential within the profession for environmental change, and this is pivotal to the entire sustainability debate.
Aimed at students who wish to pursue a career in architecture and wish to attain a highly credited Part II degree.
Graduates of this course will understand built environment design in the context of adaptation to sustainability issues.
Monthly intensive residential study weeks immerse students in their projects.
Collaboration with external designers, architects and community projects adds real-world practical experience to students' resumes.
The 22-month course allows graduates to respond to the urgent need for a greater understanding of sustainability issues in the built environment.
Student who are intending to embark on a career of Architecture and have either completed their Part 1 in Architecture or have an exemption.

Pat Borer is an architect with over 35 years experience in designing and constructing 'green' buildings. He has been closely involved with the Centre for Alternative Technology in the design and development of:ultra-low energy buildings, passive and active solar heating systems, photovoltaic roofs, benign building materials and technologies, co-operative ways of building and healthy internal environments. Elsewhere in the country, Pat has been developing ecological timber frame designs for the self-build housing sector.

CAT’s 35 years of sustainable education experience has led to the development of courses that not only tackle environmental issues, but are focused on sustainability at the core of every aspect of learning.
Entry requirements
- Exemption from RIBA part 1
- Presentation of a portfolio of work
Applicants who have been educated overseas but lack RIBA part 1 exemption can gain exemption by presenting their previous work independently to the Architects Registration Board (ARB) as an external student.
Fees
Currently the fees for the entire course are:
- UK and EEA students: £12000
International students should note that we do not have a Tier 4 Sponsor licence, which would allow us to accept International students who require student visas to study on our residential courses. Please take a look at our MSc Architecture: Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies course, which is available by distance learning. This is a wide ranging and comprehensive course in sustainable architecture and renewable energy.
