Course programme

Competence based approach to a level five qualification. Intended for managers with a demanding operational position who would also have a planning dimension to their role

The coaches of Logistics Learning Alliance have been involved with training people working in the supply chain and its related activities for many years. In the UK we are a Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (UK) approved centre for the delivery of the qualifications, managing the learning programmes for the majority of students who pursue the qualifications by distance learning.

Our hallmark is the practical approach we use. All of our coaches have worked in industry, undertaking the tasks for real and they can pass on the benefit of this hands on experience to the students they support.

The experience of working with a wide range of companies gives us a unique view of how supply chain management is developing and what the challenges of making it happen really are. We have brought this experience into the design, development and delivery of this Level Five Professional Diploma programme.

The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT (UK)) L5 Professional Diploma in Logistics and Transport provides a tangible recognition of the professional knowledge and skills of middle managers working in a logistics environment. The CILT (UK) Professional Diploma linked to a minimum of one year's appropriate experience leads to membership of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport at the Members grade (MILT (UK))

The CILT (UK) Professional Diploma has been modeled on a competency model which specifies precisely what a manager should be able to do and how well it should be done. It is a recommended qualification for managers involved with:-

  • Contributing to the establishment of logistics strategy
  • Establishing activity plans to support logistics strategy
  • Reviewing operational activities
  • Allocating work to others
  • Achieving specific results by using resources effectively
  • Carrying out policy in your defined area of authority
  • Controlling limited financial budgets and
  • Contributing to broader activities such as change programmes and recruitment.

Typically candidates will hold middle management positions, such as Distribution Manager, Production Planning, Materials Manager, Warehouse Manager, Transport Manager, Inventory Manager. This is also a suitable level for graduates entering the function.

It should be noted that the use of job titles within the above context can be misleading, depending upon the size of the company, the real indicator as to the appropriate level should be the activities in which the individual is involved. If there is any doubt, advice should be sought from Logistics Learning Alliance.

The programme is modular with compulsory modules in Core Management and Supply Chain Management. The student should also elect two further modules from:

  • Warehouse Management
  • Inventory Managment
  • Production Planning
  • Sourcing & Procurement
  • Movement of Goods
  • International Business
  • Supply Chain Flow Planning
  • Supply Chain Network Planning
  • Retail Logistics

It should be noted that the LLA approach is for students to be assessed on the quality of their coursework rather than by examination.
