Qualifications
You will need to be working in the construction sector and be likely to continue working in the sector for the duration of the programme
You will have either: a foundation degree, HND or equivalent Level 5 qualification in construction or have significant (normally at least five years') prior experience of work in the construction sector.
English and Mathematics at Grade C GCSE or equivalent qualifications
New UCAS Tariff.

This degree is specifically designed to develop the knowledge, practical skills and competences you will need to operate as an Engineering Manager. What you do and learn in your workplace will be assessed as part of the degree and the assignments you complete will be based on what you do at work.

Modules

Negotiated WBL Project (Professional Development Portfolio) - Compulsory

Designed to prepare you for professional body membership and enable you to produce evidence of your professional competence and develop an in-depth understanding of your industry environment - this will include the need for a high level of professional and ethical conduct. Assessment will require a portfolio including a Learning Log that evidences the achievement of professional competencies and a reflective account of your engagement with a professional network.

Negotiated WBL Project (Managing Cost and Risk) - Compulsory

This module is designed to develop your ability to manage engineering budgets, cost, cash flow, profit and risk. This will include monitoring, interpreting and applying the results of analysis and modelling to support continuous improvement towards achieving the identified project objectives.

Negotiated WBL Project (Managing Project Standards) - Compulsory

This module aims to develop your ability to manage and convert stakeholder expectations and end user needs into project outcomes. You will demonstrate your management ability to run an engineering function on site using the application of information from technical literature as well as the development of your awareness of quality issues towards continuous improvement demonstrating your knowledge of principles of design and construction and ability to communicate these to the wider team. This includes interpreting specs into safety, quality and performance standards. You will also be able to demonstrate the impact of various form of contract on outcomes.

Negotiated WBL Project (Managing Project Delivery) - Compulsory

This module will help you demonstrate your ability to manage change: develop and communicate short term plans; to organise, coordinate and schedule tasks and activities; to brief and prepare teams to meet targets; to monitor, interpret and apply the results of analysis and modelling in order to bring about continuous improvement; to plan, action, review and learn from executed work and to anticipate and adjust in the short, medium and long term.

Negotiated WBL Project (Project Proposal) - Compulsory

This module is designed to support the identification of a chosen area of engineering management practice that can be developed into your Engineering Management Project. You will develop approaches and methods that enable you to ask intelligent questions about your chosen area of practice and to formulate a proposal and plan for the Final Project. You will need to discuss and agree your project proposal with both your employer / Workplace Mentor and your Module Tutor.

Negotiated WBL Project (Engineering Management Project) - Compulsory

This module builds on your Project Proposal to implement your project plan and apply chosen inquiry methods towards achieving your negotiated project objectives. You will develop your proposal to further define the management problem or area of inquiry including identifying project constraints. You will be required to apply in-depth knowledge, understanding, critical, practical and personal skills towards the development of creative and innovative solutions in a practical context. The form of assessment will be negotiated but is likely to include a project report, presentation and/or other relevant artefacts.

Specialist Project Modules

You will complete three Specialist Project modules that are designed to enable you to develop your knowledge, understanding, skills and competence in the key areas of Managing Cost and Risk, Managing Project Standards and Managing Project Delivery. The specific form of the required assessment for these modules will be negotiated and agreed with your employer / Workplace Mentor and Tutor. Typically, assessment will include a Reflective Project Report and Presentation or other relevant artefacts.

You can find more information about this course in the programme specification. Optional modules are usually available at levels 5 and 6, although optional modules are not offered on every course. Where optional modules are available, you will be asked to make your choice during the previous academic year. If we have insufficient numbers of students interested in an optional module, or there are staffing changes which affect the teaching, it may not be offered. If an optional module will not run, we will advise you after the module selection period when numbers are confirmed, or at the earliest time that the programme team make the decision not to run the module, and help you choose an alternative module.
