Overview
If you are already pursuing a career in the youth, community and families sector, this course will help you enhance your qualifications. You will combine academic and work-related experience and knowledge to learn lifelong skills and gain a higher level qualification.
As part of this course you will examine the types of roles that are needed in communities through the analysis of current policies and legislation, as well as the psychological aspects of understanding behaviour.
This course has been designed to reflect the Children’s Workforce Development Council’s (CWDC) role profile of those working as support workers. It recognises the importance of tailored support to meet individual family and community needs as well as voluntary support organisations such as Home Start.
UCB has many industry links with support organisations including Birmingham City Council, Walsall Council, the Regional Youth Work Unit and the Training Agencies Group in youth and community work.
The skills you will learn on this course have been mapped against the National Occupational Standards for social work, health studies and youth and community work; all of which are endorsed by the Sector Skills Councils.

A Level 3 qualification, preferably in a similar knowledge area
You must be working in an appropriate environment for 8-10 hours per week (paid or unpaid)

Academic Skills (SEC)
Your vital skills and abilities will be developed to enable you to study effectively at an undergraduate level. Key learning concepts will be identified and related to skills relevant to the industry, which will then be developed through a variety of tasks and activities. This is done in a relevant context that takes into account the wider education and community focus of your course as a whole.
Emotional Intelligence in Practice
This module is designed to invite you to explore personal attitudes, beliefs and skills in order to enhance practice by examining experiences across the human lifespan and monitoring development. It promotes the importance of understanding the self and others in a variety of contexts. You will be developing yourself personally and professionally by focusing on self-awareness and reflection.
Managing Activities and People
You will be given a broad introduction to management theory and managerial behaviour, exploring changes in the structure of working practices within organisations. You will understand the processes and factors that shape individual differences, group dynamics and leadership styles within a working environment.
Policies in Action
The focus of this module is to develop your knowledge and skills in preparation for working within the field of youth and community - especially with young people. You will learn how to respond appropriately to the needs of young people as well as studying multi-agency working, safeguarding and how to work with vulnerable groups.
The Professional at Work 1
You will learn about how personal attitudes, beliefs and skills can enhance practice by looking at human development and experiences across a person's lifespan. You will learn the importance of understanding yourself and others in a variety of contexts and your personal and professional development is promoted through a focus on self-awareness and reflection.
Year 2
Developing Interpersonal Skills
The importance of effective communication in all professional contexts is widely recognised. Professionals within the youth and community sector need to be sensitive to individual people's needs, so your interpersonal communication and your counselling skills will be developed. To do this, you will focus on a practical approach to learning both at university and in the workplace.
Research Methods in Action
Developing a knowledge and understanding of methods, processes and tools is crucial within research, and you will be encouraged to approach it as a practitioner. You will learn the skills for designing a research proposal as well as piloting appropriate research tools.
The Professional at Work 2
You will be looking at how to enhance practice in the workplace, looking specifically at ethical considerations and examining people's personal attitudes, beliefs and skills. You will be reflecting on your personal and professional development, supported by visiting lecturers and visits to different professional contexts.

Criminology and Criminal Justice
This module will provide you with an introduction to the social sciences in relation to criminology and criminal justice. This includes historical developments within the area and an exploration of different theories and perspectives. You will also be studying values and ethics and the structural impact of policies and criminal justice practice.
Substance Misuse
You will develop a realistic awareness and understanding of the use and misuse of all illegal and legal drugs, the numerous treatment options, the social context of recreational and problematic drug use and related theory and policy.
Working with Gangs
If you want to pursue a professional role working with people in gangs, this module will equip you with theoretical understanding of the processes that contribute to why people are involved in gangs and gang violence. You will investigate the discourse surrounding urban street gangs, discuss appropriate interventions, critically analyse government responses and how to engage communities.
Community Studies
You will be looking at the concept of community and the ways in which they develop and change and exploring how certain services and resources meet the needs of particular groups. You will be encouraged to relate your studies to your placements through observing a particular service, such as a local school or community organisation and the socio-economic factors that impact on its local community.
Dynamics in Families
You will explore the sociological, psychological and cultural aspects of the concept of 'family' as well as researching the types of dynamics within a family unit. Professional intervention in family-related work will also be examined.
Family Wellbeing
Social and emotional health and wellbeing are foundations for enabling a family to function. You will be focusing on the needs of a new family and the skills and strategies required by practitioners to support these needs. You will also be exploring theoretical concepts surrounding resilient wellbeing and therapeutic relationships as well as reviewing family support services to enable a wider understanding of the sector.
Supporting Transition
You will be equipped with a theoretical understanding of the processes of transition and change, examining various models and deciding which ones are the most appropriate. This will enable you to develop strategies and observe behaviours to determine whether or not an individual or family is coping with transition or change in their lives.
Mentoring for Learning
In order to support the practice of mentoring, you will build on your knowledge, skills and attitudes as well as participating in practical activities in order to enable you to explore ideas within mentoring and develop your understanding of it as a learning resource.

Additional information

Teaching & assessment You will attend one day per week. The timetable is made up of one module per semester with three semesters in total. The research module is started in semester one and completed in semester three. Smaller group teaching - 3 hours of seminars in small groups discussing topics presented in lectures Tutorials - 1 hour is timetabled per week consisting of a mixture of personal, group and academic tutorials Individual study You will need to apportion approximately 10 hours per week outside of the timetabled hours. Some weeks the amount of time you need for personal study will increase, especially when completing assessments. UCB Online provides a 24 hour access to learning and support material. Assessment Assessment is designed to provide you an opportunity to demonstrate your strengths in a number of ways and so a variety of assessment methods are used. There is a strong focus on the vocational nature of this course and the application of theory into practice. Your work experience is the basis for most assessments where reflection is strongly encouraged. An estimated breakdown of the assessment for this course is as follows: Coursework - 75% Practical assessment - 20% Written examinations - 5 % Please note that the information provided above is indicative only and actual timetables and assessment regimes will be issued to students at induction.
