The course equips students for careers in psychological research or related disciplines. Students will be able to: Design, plan and carry out psychological research projects from literature research to analysis of data. Select the appropriate quantitative or qualitative research method for different research questions and critically reflect its strengths and limitations. Apply skills of information processing, computing and advanced statistical analysis. Communicate the purpose and outcome of psychological research to different audiences orally and in writing.

About this course
A 2:1 degree in Psychology or a cognate discipline. Students are required to submit a research proposal to aide the selection of a suitable supervisor for their research project.

Syllabus
The course has been recognised as a training outlet according to the guidelines for postgraduate training by the Economic and Social Research Council. It consists of two mandatory taught courses and a supervised research project, which cumulates in a dissertation:
- Professional Research Skills (data collection methods, time and project management, ethics)
- Advanced Research Methods (philosophical foundations of psychological research, qualitative data analysis and advanced statistical analysis and modelling)
Students also take part in seminars at the School and can chose from a range of courses offered by the College and a collaborative programme, the Scottish Universities Postgraduate Psychology Research Training (SUPPORT).
Assessment
The two taught courses are assessed through coursework. The research project is assessed on the basis of presentations, a dissertation and an oral examination.
Teaching
Professional Research Skills for MRes Psychology
Lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical classes. Reviewing the literature, research strategies and skills, statistics for psychological research, ethics, dissemination and writing skills.
Advanced Research Methods for Psychology
Methods in neuroscience and health psychology. Historical and philosophical issues in psychology, qualitative methodology, advanced statistical techniques.
Research Project for MRes Psychology
No formal teaching but attendance at weekly 1.5 hour research seminars is compulsory, along with attendance and presentation at student-led research presentation sessions.
