About this course

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. However, it should be noted that Psychology contains mathematical analysis and scientific procedures. This is an excellent route into AS Psychology for those students unlikely to achieve grade C in Maths, English and/or Science.

About the Course
This course will be suitable if you are interested in psychology, but are not qualified or do not feel ready or confident enough to start on the AS Level course. You will study a total of ten topics which will be assessed through two units.
The first unit includes: Sex and Gender (including how we develop a sense of being male or female); Memory (including how to improve memory); Attachment (including whether or not children need a maternal bond); Obedience (including why we follow the orders of someone in authority) and Atypical behaviour (including phobias and how we acquire them).
The second unit includes: Criminal behaviour )including theories of why people become criminals); Perception (including the nature nurture debate and how advertisers can influence people's perception); Cognitive Development (including how and why children think in a different way to an adult); Non-verbal Communication (body language and how cultures can differ in some kinds of body language) and The Self (including who are you? What are you? how are you? And how these are all parts of how your identity is formed).
You will also learn about how psychologists carry out their research and take part in some mini practical investigations including an experiment, a questionnaire and an observation. You will also have the opportunity to take part in our Psychology Day. During this you can take part in real research projects run by our local universities.

Assessment is by three exam papers, two assess the units and ten topics and one assesses your research skills.
Fees
No Course Fees for Under 19's. Over 19's must pay, or claim Level 2 or Level 3 Entitlement for FREE courses .
What next?
You could consider progressing to AS Level Psychology. It is also useful for other A Level subjects. The qualification could be of use in many caring professions, retail work or other places where you need to interact with people.
