Public Health HNC
The HNC programme is year one of the Public Health and Community Studies BA (Hons) Degree. This course will explore the fundamentals of modern public health and you will be introduced to the role of a health and community practitioner within an organisation. Successful completion of this course will guarantee you progression on to the HND programme in Public Health and Community Studies within Coventry University College.
Public Health HND
You can apply to this course directly or it can be progression from successfully completing the HNC in Public Health and Community Studies with Coventry University College. This HND programme is year two of the degree course. This course aims to help you to understand the demographic changes, sociological theories and social policy and its implications on health and wellbeing within the community.
You will also be introduced to counselling skills which will lead to a level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies awarded by the CPCAB. As part of this you will examine and understand the importance of effective communication and listening skills. You will also explore mental health and lifestyles issues and its impact on health at a holistic level. Successful completion of the programme will guarantee you a place on the final year to complete the BA (Hons) Degree in Public Health and Community Studies.
Public Health BA (Hons) Degree
The Public Health and Community Studies degree has been designed to help provide you with the skills you may need to excel in a multidisciplinary community environment. You should also learn how to work effectively in the support of a variety of agencies, groups of people and individuals in promoting their health and well-being.
Working in public health involves analysing factors that influence our health and wellbeing, including social, environmental, cultural, economic, political and structural factors. This work provides opportunities to contribute to reducing the causes of ill health and improving people’s health and wellbeing. The community studies aspect aims to provide employment opportunities in developing and strengthening communities within the public, private and voluntary sectors.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?Public Health HNC/HND
On successful completion of the programme you should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
- Social policy and welfare provision – this module aims to introduce you to social policy, its application in the UK and important interactions between social policy and change;
- Social groups and social divisions – this module aims to develop your awareness of the nature of contemporary society from a sociological perspective and introduce students to methodologies used to study society;
- Lifestyle trends and behaviour change – this module aims to develop your awareness of lifestyle behaviour and its impact on health and wellbeing and health promotion methods that can be used to enable behaviour change;
- Mental health and wellbeing – you will critically explore demographic changes within society and its impact on health and wellbeing. You will also analyse groups in society and factors that determine mental health and lifestyle issues and the measures that are taken to promote health and wellbeing.
Public Health BA (Hons) Degree
On successful completion of the programme you should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
- Contemporary public health – this module aims to introduce you to the role of public health in contemporary UK society. You will explore the interrelation of expert and common-sense understandings of health and illness;
- Communication skills and inclusive practice – this module aims to develop your awareness of the skills needed to work with individuals and groups in communities and to provide effective public health practice which promotes health and wellbeing;
- Community and change – this module investigates various definitions of community including an understanding of the historical, geographical, social, cultural and religious contexts of community encompassing local, national and global dimensions;
- Lifespan development and identity – this module aims to develop your awareness of the lifelong process of physical, behavioural, cognitive, and emotional growth and development of individuals. It examines the holistic factors that interrelate at various life stages and how they all contribute to make us the person we are;
- Developing cohesive communities – this module aims to develop your awareness of community development theories and practice to develop your understanding of community work. The importance of social cohesion to build healthier communities will be examined with the skills and processes involved in successful and effective community development work;
- Promoting healthy communities – this module aims to develop your awareness of the community is an important setting for health promotion. Analysis of the many influences on health that operate at a community level, highlights opportunities for health empowerment and building up the capacity of communities to participate in meeting their health needs;
- Researching and assessing communities and public health – this module aims to develop your awareness of research methods and processes that are used to study health or social factors in communities to enable you to consider in more depth an appropriate research methodology for you to research an area of their choice with confidence;
- Research project for public health or community studies – you will undertake an independent investigative piece of research after you have formulated a research question of your choice and interest. As part of this project you will demonstrate an ability to work independently using a high level of organisational skills as well as demonstrating awareness of issues of health and safety, ethical considerations and time management.
This course will be taught through a variety of methods – lectures, tutorials, self-directed learning, textbooks, module webs, scenario-based learning sets, professional libraries and resources, journals and casestudies, seminars, discussion forums and peer-to-peer learning.
TEACHING CONTACT HOURSAs a full-time student a normal learning block will mean that you get 18 hours of teaching each week in groups of approximately 25-50 students. Depending on the course you have chosen, you will attend morning (9.00-13.00) or afternoon (14.00-18.00) sessions. You will also need to attend one two-hour tutorial each week.
Part-time students will study on Saturdays 9.00 - 18.00.
