About this course
Initial assessment to ensure you are studying at an appropriate level. English and Maths at grade E, also 2 other GCSEs at grade F. An Interview and satisfactory school report with references are also required. Pre-course aptitude and fitness test (assesses basic skills in communication, observation, reasoning and logical thinking as well as bleep test, timed 1.5 mile run and grip test).

Course Overview
This course will be of particular interest to those whose eventual aim is to enter the uniformed services, including the Police Service, Fire Service, Armed Forces, Ambulance Service, Customs and Excise and other community/emergency related service organisations. It provides the skills, descipline and knowledge required to equip you for a career in the Public Services. The qualification is roughly equivalent to 4 GCSEs at D-F grade or a Foundation GNVQ.
Course Structure
10 units of 30 hours each relating to the Uniformed Public Services. The work is both of a practical/hands on nature and an academic nature. Maths, English and ICT will be studied alongside these 10 principle units.

Assessments/Examinations
Assessments are completed throughout the course using portfolio work, observations, presentations and assignments. Merits must be achieved to progress onto Level 2 Public Services.
Cost / Equipment
For students over 19 at the start of the course there will be a registration fee of approximately£90.00.
Pens and paper are essential. Students will be compiling a portfolio, and therefore one, possibly two, heavy-duty ring binders are required.
For the overnight camps students need warm and practical outdoor clothing, a fluorescent jacket, walking boots, stout shoes, a water resistant coat and suitable clothing. They will also be asked to camp out overnight so a sleeping bag and eating utensils are essential.
For fitness and sports units, gym shoes and sports clothes are required.
Contribution of£35 is required towards course materials.
A mandatory uniform will be available to purchase from the department (T shirt and sweatshirt) for approx£27 for 2 of each.
You may also need a valid passport.
Help with essential equipment costs may be available to students who experience financial difficulties.
