Public Services BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma LocationCranford Avenue Course Overview Apply Now The Public Services offer a range of diverse and exciting opportunities. This qualification has been developed to meet the needs of a broad spectrum of public service areas from uniformed roles in defence, emergency, security and justice, to non-uniformed roles in central and local government, as well as related voluntary and private sector agencies. You will gain a wide range of transferable skills needed for public service employment and have the opportunity to be involved in taster sessions, trips and visits. There will also be a programme of guest speakers. You will gain the knowledge, understanding and skills required for success in current and future employment, or for progression to courses such as BTEC Higher Nationals, Foundation degrees or Honours degrees.

• Selection is by interview. • You should have at least 5 GCSEs at minimum grade C including English and maths or equivalent or a Level 2 Diploma in Public Services with Merit. • Mature students will be assessed on the basis of an interview • You should be interested in all aspects of Public Services, outdoor activity and sport Course Content Year 1 units: • Government policies and the Public Services • Leadership and teamwork in the Public Services • Citizenship, diversity and the Public Services • Understanding discipline in the Public Services • Physical preparation, health and lifestyle for the Public Services • Skills for land-based outdoor and adventurous activities • Career planning for Public Services • Employment in the Public Services Year 2 units: • Understand the impcat of war, conflict and terrorism on Public Services • Outdoor and adventurous expeditions • Crime and it's effect on society • Planning and Management of major incidents • Police powers in the Public Services • Custodial care services • Understanding discipline in the uniformed Public Services • Fitness testing and training for the uniformed Public Services Specialist units • Skills for water-based outdoor and adventurous activities • Instructing physical activity and exercise. • Exercise, health and lifestyle • Volunteering in Public Services • Current and media affairs in Public Services In addition to this, if you are a talented individual, aged 16-19 and committed to developing your sports performance while studying, you may also be able to participate in one of our Academies – Football or Tennis. How do the Academies work? Academy players will have a timetable with coaching and playing sessions built in. This enables you to study on a full-time course and play/train for the Academy team without missing key lecture time. The Football Academy is coordinated and run by experienced and qualified coaching staff who deliver a first-class football performance programme. • Professional and FA qualified coaching team • Competitive matches in British Colleges SW regional league • Sports injury staff • Cup competitions • Excellent training and playing facilities (including new 3G artificial pitch) • Academy kit The Tennis Academy has access to four indoor courts so runs all year around. The Academy is coordinated and run by experienced and qualified coaching staff who deliver a first-class tennis performance/coaching development programme. • Professional and LTA qualified coaching team • Competitive matches and British Colleges regional competitions • Sports injury staff • Opportunity to develop coaching skills and gain recognised awards • Excellent training and playing facilities (including access to 4 indoor tennis courts) Academy selection process: To be considered for the Football Academy, you need to attend a formal trial in May where a squad will be selected for the coming year. Players that do not make the Academy squad still have an opportunity to play for the College through the second team. To be considered for the Tennis Academy you need to attend a formal trial in September where a squad will be selected. During the course there will be a number of compulsory educational visits and expeditions on offer, which will complement and add value to the classroom based learning sessions. You should set aside approximately £240 per year to cover these trips. How will I be assessed? All units are assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded. Assignments will involve individual and group work and will require the completion of investigations, reports and presentations. Progression Students who completed this course have gained places on courses such as FdA Public Services, BSc (Hons) Sports (Health & Fitness) and BA (Hons) Sports Management at institutions such as Bournemouth University, Winchester University and University of Bath. They have also gone onto study BSc Policing Studies, BSc Public Services and BSc Public Services (Policing). Fees • If you are aged 16-18 as of 31st August on the year of enrolment - no course fee. • If you are over 19 as of 31st August and enrolling on a full-time programme of study a tuition fee will be applicable in most cases, please contact us for full information.
