Public Services (Uniformed) First Diploma
This active and engaging Level 2 vocational course is aimed at students interested in pursuing a career in one of the public services, e.g. the armed forces, police, fire service or customs and excise.

What does the course involve?
The course covers a range of topics useful for students considering joining any of the public services. Assessment is through written course work as well as practical activity. Students will take part in a variety of activities such as navigation, field and camp craft, sport and coaching, team exercises, interview skills, CV compilation, filling in application forms, presentations, completing entry tests for public services and IT skills to complete assignments. The students will have the advantage of developing their practical skills and they will take part in an overnight expedition as part of the course. There are also opportunities to undertake other trips and visits together with the National Diploma students. A number of visiting speakers will visit the college during the year to give an insider's perspective on life in the Public Services.

Students will develop a wide range of work-transferable skills including time management, team work, leadership and communication. Individuals can be seen to develop their self confidence and personal effectiveness during their time with us, growing in maturity and becoming effective young adults.

What will I study?
Unit 1: Public Services Employment: the roles and responsibilities of the public services and the process of application and acceptance into each service branch.

Unit 2: Public Service Skills: this unit develops teamwork and communication skills. Students also investigate why these skills are vital in public services work.

Unit 3: Public Service Fitness: the study of basic physiology, systems and nutrition. Students take part in fitness tests and develop a personal training programme.

Unit 4 : Citizenship, The Individual and Society. Issues of citizenship, including equal opportunities, individual and human rights.

Unit 8: Land Navigation with Map and Compass: the principles of navigation on land. Students learn to use maps and compasses, plan routes, estimate time to cover distance, consider health and safety issues, act responsibly in the countryside and find direction by using sun and foliage.

Unit 10: Crime and its Effects on Society: looks at the impact of criminal behaviour, crime reduction strategies and the methods used to report and record crime. Students will also study the options available to effectively manage offenders.
