Introduction:
Our Adult Continuing Education (ACE) programmes are short leisure courses. They are ideal if you want to learn new skills, pursue an interest, have fun, and find out more about a particular subject without the stress of exams.
This course is an introductory course which examines the fear of public speaking and leads you through the process of speech preparation, organising your ideas, presentation introduction, body language, defining and adding a touch of humour a speech. It is a practical `hands-on` course which provides the opportunity to prepare and practice public speaking in a supportive atmosphere.
ACE courses are funded by Lancashire Adult Learning.
Study Mode & Location:
This 10 week part-time evening course will last for 2 hours per week. It will be held at Preston College, Park Campus, Moor Park Avenue, Preston, PR1 6AS.
Course Content:
This basic course in public speaking is for anyone who finds it uncomfortable and lacks confidence in speaking in front of more than one person. It will provide you with the necessary verbal and non-verbal skills, techniques and knowledge to speak with poise, confidence and belief in your speech and yourself. The course includes:
- Introduction to public speaking.
- Body language (voice, movement, breathing, look and dress).
- Preparation of a speech.
- Structuring your ideas.
- How to introduce your subject successfully.
- How to conclude your subject succesfully.
- How to deliver your speech.
- How to be enthusiastic in your speech.
- Delivering your own speeches on various subjects.
Assessment:
There is no formal examination for this subject so a variety of assessment methods will be used.
Careers & Progression Opportunities:
This course can lead to other ACE courses or to OCNW (Open College of the North West) START or A unit courses.

You can enrol on any of our ACE (Adult Continuing Education) courses by phone or in person. Simply phone or call into the Preston College Advice Centre. We accept SOLO and major credit cards (eg Access, Visa, Switch, Delta) EXCEPT American Express. Many courses have limited places so please enquire as soon as possible.
