Course programme

Modular structure The English Studies course will provide you with a wide scale of reference in English literature and language from different cultures and literary periods, including those before , helping you to acquire an awareness of many of the key writers, major literary movements and theoretical debates in the field. You will have the option of studying subjects such as creative writing, poetry and poetics, gender and culture, children’s fiction, Gothic literature, and American, Irish and world literatures. In your final year, you will produce a dissertation, with the option of submitting either an extended essay on a literary or language-based topic of your choice, or a portfolio of creative writing comprising a short story, a play or a series of poems, together with a self-reflective commentary on the process of composition.

Skills and experience gained You will be supported in all of your units by tutors who are knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the subjects they teach. By working in small groups and engaging in guided group discussions, you will be able to improve your debate and communication skills. Overall, the course will help you achieve the skills that will make you the kind of engaged, responsive and creative individual who is highly employable in today's innovative job market.
