This module offers the student a basic qualification in Mathematics which will develop skills relevant to many different disciplines in Higher Education. You will find the course varied, interesting and challenging.
Course Content
The syllabus is taught approximately in the order set out below. Unit One is completed in January and Unit Two in June. The final examination is in June.
Unit 1
- Arithmetic Processes
- Statistics
- Introduction to Algebra
- Graph of linear functions
Unit 2
- Graphs - constructing non-linear graphs
- Algebra - manipulating quadratic expressions
- Trigonometry - Pythagoras' Theorem and basic trigonometric functions
Assessment
Unit 1
- Assignment
- Open book End Test (1 1/2 hours)
Unit 2
- Phase Test (1 1/2 hours)
- Examination (1 1/2 hours)
Mature students who have done no maths for many years need not fear. Every topic starts from first principles. Out of approximately sixty students completing the course in the past four years, two thirds of them have achieved the grade of distinction and nearly all have passed.
This course is offered during the day - Monday 11.50am - 12.50pm, Tuesday 9.30 - 10.30am and Wednesday 10.50 - 11.50am
and on an evening - Thursday 6.30 - 9.30pm.
