This Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management course runs in 2016/17.
Quantity surveyors have exciting and challenging roles. Their involvement in construction projects begins at the feasibility stage, continues through the detailed design and construction stages and often continues when the project is completed. Consequently no two days are the same.
The Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management course will teach you how to blend traditional design skills with modern technologies whilst giving you the skills necessary to help you become a highly-trained professional in this very demanding but rewarding discipline.
If you choose this course you will benefit from:
- An accredited course leading to membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB);
- academic staff who are active researchers and consultants in their field and have professional industrial experience which they bring into their teaching;
- studying with a wide range of other professional disciplines in an integrated Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Building, reflecting the modern interdisciplinary nature of construction projects;

Accreditations shall be renewed in accordance with the accreditors standard review process and subject to the University maintaining the same high standards of course delivery.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?The course develops your core knowledge, intellectual and practical skills to enter professional and management roles in the construction industry.
The course themes include: construction technology, traditional quantity surveying skills – building and civil engineering measurement and documentation, construction contracts and procurement, construction cost management and commercial management.
These core course themes have been developed based on the course philosophy which is to provide a balance between the traditional fundamental knowledge needs of the quantity surveyor, whilst simultaneously providing the needs of tomorrow’s market place.
HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?You will find that your course is taught using lectures, seminars, tutorials, laboratories, workshops and studio sessions. These will be supervised by academic and technical support staff. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.
You will work with staff on real-world problems from industry, commerce and research groups, as you would in professional practice; this means that you develop all of the professional skills at the same time as you learn the technical content of your degree.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 40%; coursework, essays 20%; practical or project work 20%; group work 10%; presentations, posters etc.10%. A compulsory Add+vantage module must also be completed, please see page 21 for more details.
TEACHING CONTACT HOURSIn a typical week you will have up to 20 contact hours of teaching and this will break down as:
Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 6 hours of practical classes, tutorials and project work (or later, individual project supervision) each week
Medium group teaching: 6 hours of tutorials, CAD or drawing studio each week
Large group teaching: 8 hours of lectures each week
Personal study: 20 hours each week studying and revising in your own time – including some guided study using handouts, online activities, etc.
