As a rail track maintenance worker, you would help repair and maintain the railways, tunnels, bridges and trackside equipment that makes up the country’s rail network. The pathways within this framework cover semi-skilled job roles in these areas. Rail track maintenance workers play a key role in ensuring the infrastructure systems that make up the rail network are installed and maintained to correct standards, to ensure the safe and efficient running of the railway. Industry regulations stipulate a minimum age of 18. Applicants are required to undertake an eight week Pre-Apprenticeship programme.

Course programme



As a rail track maintenance worker, you would help repair and maintain the railways, tunnels, bridges and trackside equipment that makes up the country’s rail network.   • Track Maintenance


The course includes:



  • NVQ Diploma Level 2 in Rail Engineering Track Maintenance

  • City & Guilds NVQ Certificate Level 2 in Rail Engineering Electrification Maintenance


As part of the Apprenticeship famework you will also study Employment Rights and Responsibilities, and Functional Skills.


What are the Entry Requirements?

Successful completion of the Rail Engineering Pre-Apprenticeship and 4 GCSEs (grades A* – D), or equivalent, including English, maths and science.



What can I do next?

Career pathways may include employment as a skilled track operative and, with further training and development, progression to a team leader or supervisory role. Possible progression to an Advanced Apprenticeship.

Considering an apprenticeship?
Many young people look to an apprenticeship to gain valuable skills directly in the workplace.
You can apply for both an apprenticeship, and a full-time course as your back up,
but note that you will need to do some research to find an employer willing to take you on as an apprentice
if you do not already have one.
