This BSc (Hons) degree in Real Estate offers you the chance to study across a wide range of disciplines and property sectors. Although the emphasis is on residential and commercial property, rural property is covered in all three years of the academic programme. It will equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to enter general/mixed practice. The broad scope of the course will enable you to appeal to a wider spectrum of potential employers.

You will gain an understanding of acquisition, sale, letting, development and management of property interests and investments, together with the relevant law and practice underpinning these disciplines. In addition to the core surveying skills of valuation, building construction, law and town and country planning, you will be introduced to the history and dating of vernacular architecture, and the psychology of sales, letting and negotiation underpinning property deals.

You will have the opportunity to go on an optional overseas study tour to experience the workings of property markets overseas. This year students visited Dubai and Singapore.

This course is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. On successful completion of the course you will be entitled to start the 2-year Assessment of Professional Competence after commencing employment with a recognised employer.

Work experience

Our staff support individual students in finding first and second year work experience placements and internships during the holidays. This work experience is invaluable to enable students to make their own contacts in the profession and gain an understanding of the diverse nature of professional work so that they can decide on the type of work that they would most enjoy. Many students will gain work experience in residential, commercial and leisure property, but some may decide to broaden their horizons to include the rural sector, as well.

If they so wish, students are free to take a year out of their studies after the successful completion of the 2nd year in order to commence the first year of their Assessment of Professional Competence (APC). In such circumstances, students would be required to find their own employment and apply individually to the RICS for the work to qualify for the APC. They would then be permitted to return to complete the final year of the degree.

Additional information

All applicants are encouraged to undertake some property work experience before commencing the course, although this is not a requirement. If you are keen to enter rural practice you might also like to undertake some practical farming as well as some work experience in real estate. The course manager will be happy to provide further guidance to you about what work experience would be most suitable for your circumstances.

Alternative entry routes are available for a range of other qualifications. Prior experience is also considered, subject to approval by the programme manager and admissions staff.
