Why BSc(Hons) Real Estate?
Real estate encompasses commercial and residential property across the public, private and charity sectors. Property management is a feature of most large organisations while residential property includes an increasingly diverse range of tenures and organisational arrangements. There is considerable demand for qualified professionals with the skills and knowledge to develop, value and manage our built environment.
Why study our course?
You will learn about buying and selling, valuations, resolving landlord and tenant disputes, negotiating compensation and day-to-day management. You will examine legal and economic forces and their impact on planning and professional practice. As you progress, you will value property for different purposes and utilise landlord and tenant law in property management. During your final year, you will study commercial agency and the international environment for property management.
Real world experience
You will address sustainability issues and develop a site with students across professional disciplines in a way which reflects industry. Our real estate partner employers are involved throughout providing industry knowledge, placements and recruitment advice. You will learn about different careers and approaches on site visits and field trips. You can apply your skills on a placement, which may qualify as part of the professional development required to achieve Chartered status.
Where it can take you
On graduation, you can go into a wide range of careers across the public, private, residential and commercial sectors. As a result, job opportunities are varied and challenging with professions including property management, valuation, development, taxation, purchase, sales and disposal.

You will study the Foundation Year alongside students from our other Surveying, Construction and Property courses, and so you may be able to transfer to a course in one of these areas at the end of the Foundation Year.

The normal expectation is that you must pass all Year 0 modules before progressing to Year 1.

Year 1

Modules provide an introduction into the valuation of property; landlord and tenant law; and building construction. You will study the following modules:

  • Professional Practice for the Built Environment
  • Property Management
  • Valuation, Rating and Taxation
  • Examination and Evaluation of Existing Buildings

Optional placement year

All students are encouraged to spend their third year on placement. The curriculum in the second year includes support finding this placement. Students who undertake a placement year will complete a work-based research project.

Final year

During your final year, you will deepen your understanding of valuation through its application to real-world scenarios. You will learn about commercial agency and the international environment for property management. You will also develop a site as part of an interdisciplinary team and focus on your chosen area of interest in a dissertation.

You will study the following modules:

  • Dissertation
  • Valuations
  • International Property Management
  • Agency

Plus one of the following modules:

  • Collaborative Practice
  • Work-based Research Project

The University continually enhances our offer by responding to feedback from our students and other stakeholders, ensuring the curriculum is kept up to date and our graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need for the real world. This may result in changes to the course. If changes to your course are approved we will inform you.

Learning and Teaching

Our tutors provide a friendly, collaborative environment for learning. They are also actively engaged in research or professional practice so you learn directly from the latest academic and business developments.

The course is taught through a blend of learning activities, which include tutor led and face-to-face learning, student-led and independent study, online study, group projects and students supporting one another's learning. Practical skills are developed through role-plays and employer visits.

You are encouraged to do 'formative work' to prepare for assessments: this does not count towards your marks but feedback will help improve your performance. Support is available for students who have difficulties with numeracy, IT, literacy and study skills.

For more details see our full glossary of learning and teaching terms.

Study time

Lectures, workshops/seminars, group project work, and tutoring account for 12-15 hours of contact time per week. You will be expected to spend at least double this time (24 hours) in essential independent study.

Assessment

You will be assessed through a combination of coursework, unseen and seen examinations. As well as assessing your knowledge and skills, these develop graduate attributes valued by employers. These include communication, presentation, negotiation, IT and numeracy, team working, project and time management skills. These also assess the intellectual skills of problem solving, critical thinking, analysis and evaluation, creativity and innovation.

For more details see our full glossary of assessment terms.
