You do not need to have completed GCSE Religious Education, but you must have a spread of GCSEs grade C or above, including English.

* An introduction to the major influences on the philosophy of religion, eg the strengths and weaknesses in the thinking of Plato and Aristotle

* The problems of evil and suffering, eg the possible differences between natural and moral evil and the role of human free will

Eastern religions: Buddhism
* The life and work of the Buddha including examining the conflict between Hindu beliefs and practices and Buddhism
* Key teachings
* Visit to a Buddhist monastery to see how monastic life relates to teachings in both Theravada and Mahayana teachings

* Revelation
* Miracles and the implications of the concept of miracle for the problem of evil
* Religious language and the uses of symbol, analogy and myth to express human understanding of god

* Visit to a Buddhist centre
* The importance of the Pali Canon, The Lotus Sutra and the Heart Sutra
Course Aims
The course aims to study fundamental and eternal questions of religious belief. You will develop your skills in discussion; to learn to appreciate many points of view and to express clearly the motivations of others. As with any other subject in the area of Humanities, you will acquire a range of skills, such as analysis, interpretation, critical thinking and the ability to produce evaluative pieces of writing. These skills will prepare you well for a range of courses in higher education and, beyond that, in employment generally.

How is the course assessed?
Assessment is by written examinations. There is no coursework.
Fees
No Course Fees for Under 19's. Over 19's must pay, or claim Level 2 or Level 3 Entitlement for FREE courses .
