Duration:
One year for AS Level and a further year to complete A Level.
Do I need any additional qualifications/ skills?
The specification encourages students to develop their own views. This scope for independent thought is, for many, the most welcome aspect of this subject. A willingness to read widely is essential.
How will I be assessed?
Each AS unit (Philosophy of Religion and Ethics) is assessed by a one and a half hours examination. In year two there are two written papers, each of one and a half hours.
What can I do afterwards?
The subject offers sound philosophical training, developing critical and discussion skills. It provides an excellent and highly regarded qualification for university entry.
Are there any additional costs involved?
Two textbooks will be required. For ethics, the prescribed text covers both years, while there are separate texts for Philosophy in each year. The total costs for year one texts would be about £30 for both books. In year two, the cost would be less.
