Course programme

Training courses ensure that all postgraduate students are given a thorough grounding in the techniques and tools of historical research before they carry out their dissertation. Thematic courses (options) range from straight historical subjects to courses in Literature, History of Art, Divinity, and Cultural History and Anthropology. Options will vary from year to year. Students normally take a combination of course work and write a short dissertation.

Syllabus

Students choose a combination of compulsory, training and thematic courses (options), distributed evenly between the two half-sessions.

The compulsory courses are:

  • 'Introduction to Historical Research' or another core course depending on the core discipline in which the dissertation is written.
  • 'Researching in the Early Modern'

Examples of training courses include:

  • Palaeography (Vernacular and Latin)
  • Latin (Basic and Intermediate)
  • Modern Languages

Assessment

Students must acquire 180 credits (40 from the two compulsory courses + 60 for the dissertation + 80 credits from courses chosen by the student). Assessment is based on written work and moderated according to university standards. Every student is assigned a dissertation supervisor based on their research interests.

Duration

24 months, part-time.
