COURSE OUTLINE
Day 1

1600 onwards: arrival. Please ask at reception or in the restaurant for directions to your room.
1800 Supper in restaurant.
1900 Introductions to the Centre, the course, and each other.

Day 2
0830 Breakfast in restaurant
0930 Introduction to building heating systems. Energy and power, conventional boilers, system types, demands, energy conservation and heating controls
1100 Coffee in restaurant.
1130 Calculating demands, benefits of insulation, delivery systems-radiators under floor. Sizing of radiators.
1300 Lunch in restaurant.
1400 Tour of CAT buildings.
1600 Tea in restaurant.
1630 Low energy and passive solar design.
1800 Supper in restaurant.

Day 3
0830 Breakfast in restaurant.
0930 Wood and biomass fuels, different types, effect of moisture content, requirements for efficient combustion. Fuel management and storage, calculation of annual fuel requirement.
1100 Coffee in restaurant.
1130 Boiler types, specification, systems, maintenance requirements.
1300 Lunch in restaurant.
1400 Tour of CAT boilers and others in area.
1600 Tea in restaurant.
1630 Boiler sizing and worked examples students should if possible bring their own building plans.
1800 Supper in restaurant.

Day 4
0830 Breakfast in restaurant.
0930 Principles behind solar collectors, different types and applications.
1100 Coffee in restaurant.
1130 Solar thermal systems including domestic hot water, swimming pools.
1300 Lunch in restaurant.
1400 Tour of solar thermal systems at CAT.
1600 Tea in restaurant.
1630 Practical session assessing the performance of solar thermal systems.
1800 Supper in restaurant.

Day 5
0830 Breakfast in restaurant.
0930 How heat pumps work, types of heat pump and their performance. Effect of different heat loads.
1100 Coffee in restaurant.
1130 Visit bottom station heat pump installation. Wind-up session.
1300 Lunch in restaurant then depart.
