Course programme

This is an advanced, in-depth home study course helping students to prepare to sit the RHS Advanced Level 3 Certificate. It is designed for students who are at the start of their horticulture career, wishing to develop their knowledge and skills to the next level. Keen amateurs will also find this a rewarding and informative course. We recommend that students have some previous training, either the RHS Level 2 Certificate or a similar qualification, before embarking on the Level 3 Advanced Certificate course.

At the end of the course you will be awarded a Garden School Certificate of Course Completion. You will also be ready to sit the RHS Level 3 Advanced Certificate in Horticulture, which you can do at an authorised examination centre in your area. (There is an additional fee for the examinations and registration with the RHS.) Your tutor will provide personal support and advice to help you complete your assignments and prepare effectively for the exam.

The course normally takes 12 to 18 months. Each module involves approximately 18 hours of study time. Students have up to three years to complete this course, allowing them to work through the modules at their own pace. On average, however, it takes students around 12 - 18 months to complete the course, based on 4 - 6 hours study time per week.

Study topics covered include: plant propagation; health and safety; growing media and plant nutrition; plant anatomy and physiology; plant health; important pests, diseases and disorders; soil science; effective cultivation techniques; outdoor plant production - fruit and vegetable crops, nursery stock; protected plant production - environmental controls and key production techniques; design of ornamental gardens; selecting, establishing and maintaining landscaping plants; ornamental landscape construction. Includes two course books, Principles of Horticultural Science and Principles of Horticulture.
