Course information:
Rock School Instrumental Tuition

Course summary:
This is a one year course. One 2 ½ hour session per week
• Experienced players have the opportunity to join in performances/shows
• Beginners and less confident performers join in with informal workshops
• Everyone participates in technique sessions and aural workshops

Course content:
This is a one year practical course aimed at students who are keen to learn the instruments covered by the Rock School group of qualifications.
• Electric Guitar
• Electric Bass
• Keyboard
• Drums
Electric guitarists and bass guitarists will need to bring their own instrument and a jack to jack lead; Keyboard players don†t have to bring anything but would benefit from having a keyboard at home (anything will do, providing it doesn†t have tiny keys!)
All students receive tuition which:
• Covers different pieces set by RockSchool and free choice items
• Helps develop general knowledge of your instrument and its repertoire.

Assessment procedure:
At the end of the year there is one practical session where you perform your pieces to a RockSchool assessor. The session varies in length, but as a guide, for beginners the session lasts 12 minutes and for the most advanced performers, up to 40 minutes.

Entry requirements:
This course is for full time students aged 16-19 and is suitable for both beginners and experienced players. Each instrument is offered at three levels so if you are a beginner you needn†t be shy-you will be with people like you. Similarly, if you are in a working band you will be able to progress with equally able musicians.

Qualifications achieved:
All successful candidates receive a RockSchool certificate which can be included on university application forms etc.
• Level 1 Beginners to Grade 3
• Level 2 Grades 4 and 5
• Level 3 Grades 6 to 8
Students achieving grades 6 to 8 add a lot of points to their university applications.
For students wishing to enter university from 2005 onwards, the UCAS tariff for grades 6, 7 and 8 are as follows;

Grade 6 7 8
Distinction 45 60 75
Merit 40 55 70
Pass 25 40 55

If you consider that an AS level at grade A or a full A level qualification at grade D will bring you 60 points, you can see how valuable the grade examination can be to your total. Remember, these points count even if you†re not applying to do music at university.

Free study and financial support:
Most full-time students do not have to pay for their course. We may also be able to help you with some of the extra costs associated with college, eg travel, childcare, equipment, books etc. In addition, if you have just left school, you may be eligible for an Educational Maintenance Allowance. Please ask us about â€-Money Matters†for more details.
