About this course
A reasonable level of fitness is required as there will be several medium grade walks on uneven mountain tracks. There will be some bending and squatting at mine sites.

A practical course on two Saturdays visiting sites in Cumbria to learn how the landscape was formed, and how man has exploited its mineral wealth. Will involve some walking and exploring.
What will the course cover and how will it be taught?
The course will cover the follwoign topics:
Topic 1, The physical formation of the landscape.
Topic 2, The sequence of mineralisation with particular reference to Copper, Iron and Slate.
Topic 3, The identification of specific minerals and how to find them.
Topic 4, The history of man's exploitation of the minerals found in Cumbria.
Topic 5, Mining methods as developed from the Roman period onwards.
Topic 6, Water power in mining and in mineral processing.
Topic 7, Safety and access on abandoned mine sites.
You will learn through observation and experience, discussions and asking questions.
