RYA DAY SKIPPER
Entry Requirements
· Theoretical knowledge of students in
navigation and seamanship is assumed to be non-existent.
· Familiarity
with the use of a personal computer and a mouse is an advantage.
Description
·
This is the Royal Yachting Association's entry level course to navigation
theory, safety and seamanship. Please note that entry level doesn't
necessarily mean simple!
· Teaching methods include: lectures, the
course book, handout notes, practical demonstrations, video clips, use of
pc-based Admiralty RYA Electronic Chartplotter (Training Version) and
exercises in class and at home.
· Homework exercises are an essential
contributor to successful completion of this course and students with some
sailing experience should be prepared for this to take, on average, 2
hours per week and for students with no sailing experience possibly more.

The aim of this course is to prepare and assess students for the award of
the RYA Day Skipper Shorebased certificate which is awarded on successful
completion of the course.
Given good attendance and completion of
the classwork and homework exercises, after completing this course
students should be able to:
· describe the parts of a boat,
ropes/anchor equipment and it's use, safety equipment and it's use and
explain briefly the main "rules of the road".
· plan a course
to steer allowing for tide and leeway and confirm progress en route by
means of estimated positions, fixes and the use of electronic navigation
systems in associated with paper and/or electronic charts.
· plan a
short passage allowing for the weather and explain how to decide which
shallows the boat can safely pass over.
· plan for safe harbour entry
taking account of tide, weather, obstructions, navigation marks and use of
electronic navigation systems.
Course Content
· Basic
seamanship.
· Introduction to navigation.
· Introduction to
meteorology.
Where a course is aimed towards an assessment/examination,
it is expected that all students will enter for the qualification.

Continuous assessment and final exam (2 papers).

Offshore Shorebased course at BCOT.

· RYA Pack, final assessment papers (2) and certificate
will be provided at first session.
· Precis handout notes are available
in the form of a small book included in the RYA pack

Navigation Tables
· Notebook & pen, 2B pencils & eraser
The
following two items are recommended but not essential - a school geometry
set will suffice
· Portland navigational plotter & MOD pattern 9 inch
(wide-span) heavy brass pencil holding compass part number PLA0037

· Chart 5011 (Symbols & Abbreviations used
on Admiralty Charts - actually a book).
