RYA YACHTMASTER OCEAN (SHOREBASED)
Entry Requirements
Applicants will normally have
successfully completed the RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore
Shorebased course.
Description
· The course is for anyone
wishing to extend their knowledge of navigation to include ocean passages.
Successful completion of this course exempts candidates from the written
part of the examination for the RYA/DoT Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of
Competence.
· Teaching methods include: Lectures, the course book and
optional CD-ROM for handout notes, practical demonstrations, video clips
and exercises in class and at home.
· Homework exercises are an
essential contributor to successful completion of this course and students
should be prepared for this to take a minimum of 2 hours per week.

The aim of this course is to prepare and assess students for the award of
the RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Shorebased certificate which is awarded on
successful completion of the course.
Given good attendance and
completion of the classwork and homework exercises, after completing this
course students should be able to:
· explain the theory of navigating a
yacht on an ocean passage in the event of total electrical failure, e.g.
no electronic navigation systems, and given sufficient sights of celestial
bodies be able to fix position anywhere in the world.
· plan an ocean
passage taking account of prevailing winds and ocean currents and avoiding
hazardous periods e.g. hurricane season.
· explain what is involved in
preparing and provisioning a yacht and crew for an ocean passage.
Course
Content
· Astro-navigation including an introduction to practical
use of the sextant
· Ocean meteorology
· Ocean passage planning
Where
a course is aimed towards an assessment/examination, it is expected that
all students will enter for the qualification.
Method of Assessment
·
Continuous assessment and final exam (1 paper).
Progression
·
Providing a student holds an RYA/DoT Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of
Competence, they will be ready to undertake the qualifying ocean passage.
When that has been completed a student can then take the examination for
the RYA/DoT Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence.
· Students may
wish to consider other related leisure courses.
Materials
· RYA Pack, final assessment (1 paper) and certificate
will be issued at the first session.
· Notebook & pen, pad of A4 graph
paper, 2B pencils & eraser.
