Learning outcomes:
When medicines turn up... You arrive at Barbara’s house on a Sunday afternoon to find a bag of medicines with a note from daughter asking if you’ll give them to her. The surgery and pharmacy are both closed. Can you give these items? Would you need any paperwork? What would you do?
“Arthur just needs the occasional ‘prompt’...” You discover Arthur needs a lot more support then the care plan suggests! When does the ‘occasional
prompt’ change to mean you are now responsible for administering Arthur’s medicines? Should you be using a medicines chart? How should you record regular prompting?
Risk assessing for self medication: We’ll introduce you to our new risk assessment tool for self medication which can be used to record the type of support a client needs with their medicines and how it will be recorded.
Leaving medication out for later: Sarah takes a sleeping tablet but your last call is at 6pm. What rules govern leaving medication out to be taken later in home care. You’ll learn about the risk assessments needed and how should this be recorded.
Non-prescribed medicines: You’ll learn about the risks involved and how you can manage them.
Rules around monitored dosage systems: Edith has had a stroke and wants you to take her tablets out of their pharmacy bottles and boxes and pack them in a monitored dosage system. Can you do this? What are the rules around helping clients ill their own dosette boxes?
