Safe Release of Trapped Lift Passengers

The Health & Safety Executive emphasises the importance of ensuring that proper arrangements exist for safe (emergency) release of passengers from lift cars which have become immobilised within a lift well/shaft. The HSE cites BS7255:2001 as the Approved Code of Practice that contains the recommendations/requirements relevant to emergency release procedures and provisions.
In accordance with the British Standard, appropriate training should be provided to all relevant persons and their competence should be assessed and documented ANNUALLY.

This on-site course is designed to meet the recommendations of the HSE and the specific requirements of BS7255.

Course Format
The course duration varies from 1 day to 2 days depending on the range and type of lift equipment. The training is carried out wherever the lift equipment is installed and requires access to such equipment, machine room keys, handwinding notes and equipment, door release keys, lift-out-service signs and entrance guards for practical demonstrations and assessment. A facility to accommodate a maximum of 6 delegates is also required for the supporting classroom-based presentations.

Course Objectives
At the end of this course, successful delegates will have demonstrated competence in:

  • understanding employers and employees obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act;
  • applying the Regulations, standards and safety requirements regarding safe working on lifts;
  • understanding the basic drive systems and safety operated lift systems installed on site;
  • understanding the relationship between the weight of car and counterweight, and how to correctly assess the direction which the car will move when the brake is released;
