The current threat from terrorism in the United Kingdom can involve the exploitation of vulnerable people; including children, young people and vulnerable adults.
This Safeguarding Individuals Vulnerable to Violent Extremism training program is designed to equip staff working within the public, private and third sectors to gain a greater understanding of the various factors that may influence an individual towards violent extremism.
Through the use of various workshop activities training will assist attendees consider many factors in order to develop an understanding of these issues. Attendees will also reflect upon factors that build resilience and protect individuals.

About this course
An understanding of the Prevent agenda - UK Governments Counter Terrorism strategy and the new Counter Terrorism & Security Act 2015 (the legal impact upon specified authorities).
Recognise various methods used by extremist and terrorist groups to radicalise vulnerable individuals; the internet, social media, imagery, language, narratives, demonstrations and personal contact
Appreciate why certain individuals may be more susceptible than others to radical and extreme views
The ability to use your existing expertise and professional judgement to recognise potentially vulnerable individuals and know when an intervention may be necessary to support them
Knowledge of when, how and where to refer concerns about vulnerable individuals
The Channel program – a multi-agency support program to support individuals vulnerable to being drawn into terrorism.
This training session is delivered by Vince Donovan.
Vince recently retired in September 2014, having served the past thirty years as a Police Officer with South Wales Police.
Having served in a a variety of challenging roles within his career, Vince spent the last six years working as a Prevent Community Engagement officer in Cardiff (Prevent - UK Governments Counter Terrorism strategy), where he was responsible for engaging and supporting a significant number of individuals who were at risk of being drawn into violent extremism.
In addition to the practical aspects of this role, Vince took the lead in training delivery on behalf of South Wales Police, delivering training to representatives of the Health service (particularly those working in mental health), Schools, H.E. Colleges, Universities, the Probation Service, Youth Justice and homeless charitable organisations.
Vince was very well respected for his community engagement work and together with colleagues in 2014, he was awarded a Certificate of Commendation by Mr. Peter Vaughan, Chief Constable, South Wales Police.
