Science Applied AS Level
Applied Science analyses the importance of science in the workplace by studying various companies or organisations. This will help to increase your understanding of scientific techniques and methods adopted in these various fields.

What does the course involve?
You will investigate the importance of science in the workplace by studying a number of organisations which incorporate scientific methodS. These will range from manufacturing, health and medical sectors to environmental organisations and forensics, and one of these you will study in depth.

You will learn a variety of laboratory techniques and carry out some standard procedures. By studying these you will understand the principles of the analytical techniques used in forensic, pathology and research laboratories, and also in the chemical and energy industries. You will also gain specific knowledge of body systems and how they are regulated and monitored.

What will I study?
AS Applied Science is divided into three modules
Science at Work.

Analysis at Work.

Monitoring the Human Body.

The first two units are assessed through building a portfolio of work and the third unit is assessed by an external examination in June.
What are the entry requirements for Science Applied AS Level?
You should only apply for this course if you meet, or expect to meet, the following requirements:-
  • GCSE grade C in Science AND Additional Science/Additional Applied Science AND GCSE grade C in Maths

How useful is Applied Science?
Applied Science combines well with a range of other AS Level subjects, as it can be used to complement other vocational courses. It can also provide a work-related experience for those taking non-vocational subjects.

Does the course involve examinations?
Only the topics on body systems are assessed via a formal examination. The remainder of the course will involve completing a portfolio.

Is there very much practical work?
Some of your assignments will be based on practical investigations in the laboratory. You will also learn new techniques, making good use of our laboratory facilities.
