2. Course description Summary: This part time course offers students aged over 19 an opportunity to achieve a GCSE Science qualification. Course description: GCSE Science is offered as a one-year daytime or evening course. You will spend 3 hours per week in class and you will need to spend a minimum of 4 hours each week on your own studies and homework set by your teacher. This is an intensive and demanding course which requires full attendance and self directed study. You may need to purchase a textbook (you will be advised as to which one at the start of the course) and also have a suitable scientific calculator. The course is split equally between biology, chemistry and physics. Topics include: - The environment - Genes - Hormones and nerves - The immune system - Patterns in Properties - Making changes - Only one earth - Designer products - Producing and measuring electricity - Controlling energy - Waves - Space and its mysteries As well as the science content of these topics, you will also think about 'what science is' and 'how science is done'. The topics are all chosen to give students an understanding of science in the world around them, so it always seems relevant and something to do with their lives. The course is intended for those entering nursing, teacher training courses or those requiring this qualification for career progression or entry to Higher Education. You will need to have a mature approach to study and be highly self motivated. There is a lot of practical work, so you will need to enjoy doing experiments on your own and in small groups. You need to be ready to write, calculate, think and join in discussions. Assessment: Three exams in May/June, controlled assessment (coursework) during the course.
