Course Overview

The BA (Hons) Scriptwriting for Film and Television Degree at Bournemouth University is accredited by Skillset and is a Skillset Screen Academy Course.

"You need three things to make a good movie: a good script, a good script and a good script." (Alfred Hitchcock)

This screenwriting programme is a highly focused and unique training in creating the very foundation stone of film and television - the scripts. These feed the industry and ultimately dictate its creative direction.

The programme is taught by professionals from the world of film and television and includes a professional industry attachment.

The programme is a thorough study of all aspects of television and film: their history, their theoretical underpinning, their current status and their future. Hence scriptwriting graduates emerge with the ability to write high quality TV and film scripts - movies, sitcoms, TV drama series, soaps, short comedies, TV screenplays, etc. - and a profound and thorough understanding of the industry they are entering.

This programme was the UK's first undergraduate screenwriting programme and is one of only two undergraduate screenwriting programmes in the UK to be accredited by Skillset, the audio-visual industry's training body.

Why BU?

  • Endorsed by Skillset, the audio-visual industry's training body
  • Studying at The Media School, the UK’s only Centre for Excellence in Media Practice as designated by the Higher Education Funding Council for England
  • Strong industry links, including guest lectures - the programme is well recognised by the media industry Professional work placement
  • Vocational Skills - the programme provides students with knowledge of the industry (eg television and film as a business) and provides a practical introduction to audio and video production in a studio environment - recognising that the writers of the future will be far better equipped if they are multi-skilled
  • High graduate employment rate and desirable graduates with excellent career opportunities
