Brochure Description

This class is designed for those who have no experience but have, ‘always wanted to have a go’, as well as those who have some experience and have a project in mind. Constructing forms, working with surfaces and glazing. Students should have a number of great presents to give for Christmas. Continuing from autumn term, new members welcome.

What will I learn during the course?

The aim of the course is to develop your skills in working with clay. For the students who are new to clay work, the objectives will be:

• Thumb, coil and slab building techniques

• Plaster casting, looking at textures

• Tiles and slip decoration

• Oxides and glazing

• Health and safety with Ceramics

• There will be opportunity to draw and use computers and art library for image resources

The more experienced will be able to devise self-directed projects, if they wish (subject to practical constraints). Depending on personal interests, there will be opportunities to create moulds for casting. It is anticipated that we will do smoke firing and further glaze and surface experimentation. For those who require it we will build with armature.

Are there specific requirements for joining?

None, you must simply have an enthusiasm for trying new things.

How will I learn?

You will learn through practice and experimentation. Teaching methods include:

• The tutor will give individual help and tailor the projects to suit the students own interests.

• Tutor demonstration

• Practical activities

• Group discussions

• Looking at other artists work

• Group circulation and the work of peers

• Student sketchbook

How will I know that I am making progress?

• Tutorials

• Students will keep a type of visual journal.

• A photographic record of the students work will be kept.

• Notes and students record of progress

Will there be homework? If so how much/how many hours?

No homework, although to best utilize class time some preparation may be helpful and students might benefit from researching some image resources.

Will there be additional costs?

Standard materials sufficient for the course will cost about £12, payable to the tutor. There may be additional costs for further materials, depending on the project you choose. All materials will be charged at cost price.

Do I need specific equipment or clothes?

An old shirt and clothes that could get dirty, aprons are available.

What can I do next?

We run a wide range of courses based in Kendal, Sedbergh and Kirkby Lonsdale. You could also look at courses organised by other local Adult Education Centres at Cartmel, Dallam, Kendal Brewery Arts Centre and Kirkby Stephen.

Parking & Venue Information

The school is located on Kendal Road. Park in main school car park on Kendal Road. The Art Block is located behind the main buildings. From the car park walk to the right of the main block, then in behind it, passing the theatre/drama studio.

Payment options: Please add a £2 annual centre fee if this is your first course since September 2009. This fee is payable once per person per year. Please make cheque payable to “Cumbria County Council”.
