Seating & Posture for Adults with Complex Needs
Purpose:
- To understand why posture needs to be managed
- To apply seating biomechanics
- To be able to describe and document destructive postural tendencies
- To understand the importance of comprehensive assessment in complex seating
- To raise awareness that no assessment or a limited assessment can result in contributing to, or causing a destructive postural tendency
- To increase confidence in the comprehensive physical postural assessment (MAT evaluation): supine, unsupported sitting and simulation)
- To understand how to facilitate good posture and pressure reduction, determining the most appropriate solution
- To gain insight into the importance of 24 hour postural management with chronic conditions
Learning Outcomes:
- Appreciate the seating problems facing patients with neurological impairments, chronic degenerative conditions or the frail elderly.
- Consolidate skills in completing a physical postural evaluation, including measuring joint ranges and palpation of pelvis, spine hip joints etc.
- Feel confident in the assessment and application of critical measures for seating.
- Appreciate to role of forces and biomechanics in seating.
- Feel confident in recommending seating and pressure care intervention/solutions for this client group.
- To understand clearly the role of the OT and role of other agencies e.g. reps.
- Importance of documentation and terminology.
